WASHINGTON (24/) - MarketWatch -- Job openings barely rose in August, as
gains in education and health services, manufacturing and construction
were offset by declines in federal and state and local employment, the
Labor Department said Thursday.Openings edged up to 3.88
million from 3.81 million in July. There were 2.91 unemployed people for
every available opening, compared to 3.02 in July. The quits
rate, which economists say is an indication of willingness to seek out
higher-paying or better positions, was essentially unchanged at 1.7%.
